A 3-way switch is a single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) device. The common screw is the bridge. If you wire a traveler (which is supposed to carry the alternating path) to the common screw on Switch 1, you are feeding power into a dead-end brass screw when the toggle is flipped one way. The circuit physically cannot complete the path to Switch 2’s common terminal.
The Fix
- Turn off the breaker and verify dead.
