The Most Common Botch and How to Avoid It
The most frequent and dangerous mistake when wiring a 240V outlet is swapping the neutral (white) and the ground (bare) wires, or bonding them together at the receptacle.
The Symptom: If your panel uses a GFCI or AFCI double-pole breaker, swapping neutral and ground will cause the breaker to trip immediately upon energizing the circuit. If you are on a standard thermal-magnetic breaker, the appliance might appear to work normally. However, the appliance's metal chassis will now carry 120V return current on the ground wire.
