If you are reading this in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, or Europe, a two-way light switch circuit allows you to control a single lighting load from two separate physical locations (e.g., the top and bottom of a staircase). If you are in North America, this exact same electrical topology is called a 3-way switch circuit. The underlying physics and switching logic are identical, but the terminal naming conventions and regional wire color codes differ.
This guide uses the international (IEC/BS 7671/AS/NZS 3000) terminology and harmonized wire colors, which utilize COM, L1, and L2 terminals. We will be using the highly efficient 'Loop-at-Switch' method utilizing 1.5 mm² (approx. 14 AWG) copper cabling, which is the standard for modern lighting circuits protected by a 6A or 10A Type B/C MCB.

- Strapper Cable: 1.5 mm² 3-Core and Earth / 14 AWG 3-conductor with ground. Contains Brown, Black, and Grey cores.
- Sleeving: Brown and Green/Yellow identification sleeving (essential for code compliance on the Grey strapper and bare earth wires).
- Connectors: Push-in lever connectors (e.g., Wago 221 series, 3-port and 5-port) rated for 32A / 450V.
- Testers: CAT III or CAT IV Non-Contact Voltage Tester (NCVT) and a digital multimeter (DMM) with continuity and AC voltage functions.
- Hand Tools: Wire strippers (calibrated to 1.5 mm² / 14 AWG to avoid nicking the copper), flathead/Phillips screwdrivers, and a torque screwdriver if your switches specify terminal torque (typically 0.5 Nm to 0.8 Nm for brass lighting terminals).
Step-by-Step Wiring Procedure
This procedure assumes the main power is OFF and verified dead. We are using the 'Loop-at-Switch' method, which is ideal when you have permanent live feed entering Switch 1, and need to carry the switched live to the ceiling fixture via Switch 2.
Step 1: Prepare and Route the Cables
- Run your 1.5 mm² Twin & Earth feed cable from the distribution board (or previous junction) into the backbox of Switch 1.
- Run your 1.5 mm² 3-Core & Earth strapper cable from Switch 1 to Switch 2.
- Run a standard Twin & Earth cable from Switch 2 up to the ceiling light fixture.
- Strip back the outer PVC sheath by 25mm, and strip the individual core insulation by 8mm. Slide green/yellow sleeving over all bare earth wires immediately to prevent accidental shorting.
Step 2: Wire Switch 1 (The Feed Origin)
- Identify the Permanent Live (Brown) from the incoming feed T&E. Terminate this directly into the COM terminal of Switch 1.
- Take the 3-Core strapper cable. Terminate the Brown core into the L1 terminal of Switch 1.
- Terminate the Black core into the L2 terminal of Switch 1.
- Take the Grey core of the strapper cable. Slide brown sleeving over both ends. This wire will carry the switched live. Connect it to the outgoing Switched Live heading to the light (using a Wago connector in the backbox if routing directly to the light, or pass it through to Switch 2 depending on your exact physical cable route. In a direct daisy-chain, the Grey wire acts as the COM link to Switch 2. See Step 3).
- Connect all incoming and outgoing Blue (Neutral) wires together in a Wago connector. Neutrals do not land on the switch terminals.
- Terminate all Green/Yellow (Earth) wires to the metal backbox (if metal) or the earth terminal block in the switch plate.
Step 3: Wire Switch 2 (The Load Origin)
- Take the 3-Core strapper cable arriving from Switch 1. Terminate the Brown core into the L1 terminal of Switch 2.
- Terminate the Black core into the L2 terminal of Switch 2.
- Take the Grey core (which should have brown sleeving on it). Terminate this into the COM terminal of Switch 2. This is now your Switched Live output.
- Connect the COM terminal's output (if a separate wire is needed to reach the ceiling rose) to the live input of the light fixture.
- Connect the Blue (Neutral) from the light fixture to the neutral bundle.
- Terminate the Earth (CPC) to the light fixture's earth terminal and the backbox.
Verification and Testing Protocol
Never blindly re-energize a newly wired two-way circuit. Follow this strict testing sequence to verify logic and safety before applying mains power.
- Set your multimeter to Continuity (the diode/beep symbol).
- Place one probe on the Switched Live wire at the ceiling fixture, and the other on the Neutral wire at the fixture.
- Toggle Switch 1 and Switch 2 through all four possible combinations (Up/Up, Up/Down, Down/Up, Down/Down).
- Expected Reading: The meter should read OL (Open Loop)< 1.0 Ohm (with an audible beep) in the other two states. If you get a short (0.0 Ohms continuously) or an open circuit constantly, your L1/L2 strappers are crossed or the COM is miswired.
- Ensure all wires are pushed safely into the backboxes and faceplates are temporarily secured.
- Re-energize the MCB at the consumer unit.
- Set your multimeter to AC Voltage (V~) and use insulated probes.
- Measure between the Switched Live and Neutral at the light fixture.
- Expected Reading: You should read your nominal mains voltage (230V ±10% in the UK/EU/AU, or 120V ±5% in North America) when the switches are in the ON logic state, and 0V when toggled to the OFF state.
The Most Common Botch (And How to Fix It)
The single most frequent error when wiring a two-way light switch circuit is misidentifying the Common (COM) terminal and accidentally landing the permanent live or switched live on L1 or L2.
The Symptom: The light works perfectly from Switch 1. However, Switch 2 only works if Switch 1 is already in the 'ON' position. If Switch 1 is 'OFF', Switch 2 does nothing. Alternatively, one switch acts as a master kill-switch for the other.
The Physics of the Failure: In a two-way circuit, the L1 and L2 terminals act as parallel pathways (travelers) that carry the voltage between the two switches. The COM terminal acts as the pivot point that connects the source to the travelers (Switch 1) or the travelers to the load (Switch 2). If you wire the permanent live into L1 on Switch 1, the voltage can only reach the strappers when the switch is toggled to L1. If it's toggled to L2, the circuit is dead, rendering Switch 2 completely useless regardless of its position.
The Fix: De-energize the circuit. Pull both switches out. Identify the single wire bringing power from the breaker (permanent live) and the single wire taking power to the light (switched live). Ensure the permanent live is exclusively in the COM terminal of Switch 1, and the switched live is exclusively in the COM terminal of Switch 2. The remaining two wires at each switch (the strappers/travelers) must land on L1 and L2. Because L1 and L2 are interchangeable with each other, swapping them will only reverse the physical up/down orientation of the switch toggle, which is easily fixed by flipping the switch upside down or swapping the wires.
