Regional Variants: NEC vs. IEC vs. Legacy UK
The physical colors mapped to your schematic symbols change drastically depending on your geography and the age of the installation. Applying US colors to an IEC schematic (or vice versa) will result in a phase-to-ground fault.
If you are working in a UK home built before April 2004, the physical colors do not match modern IEC schematics. The old UK standard used Red for Phase (Hot) and Black for Neutral. In modern IEC 60446, Black is a Phase conductor and Blue is Neutral. If you connect a modern IEC appliance to pre-2004 UK wiring assuming Black is a phase line, you will create a dead short.
In the US, the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) strictly governs physical colors. While White/Gray is universally neutral and Green/Bare is ground, the ungrounded (hot) conductors can be any color except those reserved.
